Tent Related Terms & Definition

3-season tent
3 season tent generally refers to a tent designed for spring, summer, and fall. These tents design to be lightweight and to protect from rain and wind. In addition, the build typically intends to provide as much ventilation as possible.

4-season tent
4 season tent is generally a four-season tent shelter that, despite the name, is usually used only in the winter. Snowy conditions or areas of very harsh wind are prime locations for 4 season tent usage. To build these tents is to protect snow, snow buildup, ice, hail, and high winds. The walls are often made entirely mesh-free instead of polyester or nylon to trap some body heat and block gusty winds.

Freestanding tent
A freestanding tent can hold its shape on its own without needing to be staked out. These designs receive support from included tent-poles and can be picked up and shifted around camp without going limp.

Packed weight
This is the total packaged mass of all the parts. This tent includes everything from poles, rainfly, and tent bodies to stakes, footprint, and guy ropes. On top of this, it also consists of the provided bags and any extras you get.

Minimal trail weight
Refers to the combined mass of the tent body, rainfly (if applicable), and tent-poles, but not any of the other items that may appear in the package, such as tent stakes, guy cords, stuff sack, etc. By this definition, if your tent comes with guy cords attached, you’d need to remove them before weighing the tent to determine its accurate minimum mass.

Waterproof rating
The waterproof rating refers to the pressure that water can press through the tent fabric. It does not refer to the thickness of the material or the coating. This rating means that a PU3000mm rating is a fabric that can sustain 3,000 mm of water on top of the fabric before the water will leak through.

Footprint
Tent footprints, also known as ground cloths, or groundsheets, are simply accessories that function as barriers between your tent bottom and the ground. Like your hiking footwear, footprints are the footwear for your very own camp. The footprint we offer is high quality & is custom made to go with this hiking tent. However, our tents themselves are made to go without footprints for your lightest hikes!

A footprint is highly recommended to make your precious lightweight hiking tent last longer - Among various uses, it protects your light hiking tent from damage by sticks & stones on the ground where you are pitching your tent.

Tent capacity
As the name suggests, tent capacity is the number of adults or kids a tent can accommodate. More than often, the advertised sleeping capacity falls short of accommodating the number of persons it promises because these capacities are only an average of the space taken by a person without their hiking items taken into account.

As a general rule, we suggest you splurge a little more to go at least one size up for a comfortable and uncompromised camping experience. This way, you will easily accommodate yourself, other people, and your items safely. A family should consider sizing up tents for comfortable accommodation and easy, safe storage of goods and necessities.

Style of Tents

Dome tents
The most popular category of camps is dome tents offered by famous companies like Coleman. They have a dome form, are lightweight but equally sturdy in harsh weather conditions.

Anyone, even a beginner hiker, can easily set up these camps. Dome tents come in various sizes, with the larger sizes having compartments and separate sleeping spaces for different individuals. They are the perfect type of tent for a small family.

The commonly used material for dome tents is polyester and nylon. These tents are held by two strong aluminum tent poles, which are flexible and give the tent its unique shape. A fabric may be drawn over the tent after interlocking the structure in place.

Cabin tents
Cabin tents are another popular camp option known for their durability and reliability. These tents are mostly cuboidal shapes by rigid tent-poles made of steel, unlike dome tents. Consequently, they are much heavier tents, but they are certainly one of the strongest tents out there.

In addition, these tents are perfect for a larger family with young kids and allow the structure to form a greater range of shapes. With square walls and roofs, this type of tent provides a wide area and a large headroom space. Therefore, it is less claustrophobic and more comfortable than the dome tents. If you need more comfort, this one should be in consideration to be selected.

Hiking tents
Hiking tents are the camp shape we have available. These are an extremely light and compact form of a tent designed to be carried easily in hiking bags and other items. Just roll them and pop them in your backpack. Hiking tents mostly have two-person or three-person accommodation.

They are reliable for several weather conditions and are easy to set up in minutes or carry during hiking. Usually, these tents are made from lightweight polyester or nylon fabric with flexible aluminum tent poles. They show resistance and durability in most weather conditions. Coleman makes some of the most recognizable tents of this category.

Quick-pitch tents
This is one of the preferred and selected types of tents of new Australian campers of the humid and Australia. The biggest advantage of making these tents ever so popular is their ability to be set up almost in an instant without any hassle or extra help. These tents have an integrated tent pole system which makes them easily settable. You need to pop your quick-pitch, unfold it, and peg it into the ground. It can be set up in a matter of minutes by even kids.

Ridge tents
These are the traditional pyramidal tents made by two vertical tent poles attached with a crossbar roof. Due to their shape, ridge tents are usually able to accommodate one person at most. Moreover, they provide less tight headroom and even less space for keeping items or other supplies, unlike hiking tents, usually dome-shaped. These tents may only be selected for short solo camping trips. Their setup, though, is instant as well.

Geodesic tents
For extreme weather conditions, it is most appropriate to use a geodesic tent. This is because these tents have an interlinked connection of tent-poles which give them a solid structure. They are more stable for usage at higher altitudes. As a result, most hikers and mountain trekkers will choose this, especially those in areas with fast winds and storms.

Manufacturing Materials for Tents

Whenever you buy a tent, it is important to check the materials used for making them. The materials used will help you gauge the reliability and lifetime of your tent in a particular environment. Heavier tents usually cost more, last longer, are made from thicker fabric and have aluminum or fibreglass tent poles. When comparing tents, be sure to check the overall materials to assess if the product you are buying is durable.

Weather Protection in Tents

When buying tents, look for the UV protection it has. Usually, polyester-based fabrics used on tent flies and inners tend to be worn out quicker than canvas alternatives. However, most modern synthetics will be treated with some UV rating to protect you against the harmful radiation from the sun.

Also, check out the construction of other tent accessories such as guy ropes, pegs, and tent poles to see if the product you are buying will last you for a long time or be potentially unusable after one trip in the Australian wild. Please do not underestimate the power of these accessories, the significance of their part in your trip.

Tents often are available with a carrying bag to help you carry the tents and their accessories easily. These bags assist you in sorting the accessories, loading the shelter, and compactly carrying your tent on the way to the journey and back, so keep an eye out for such items. Check if a bag is bundled with your tent or not.

Another weather safety feature you need to look out for is the ventilation within the camp itself. In humid weather in Australia, ventilation is an important survival factor to consider for camping. Whether it is a clear window or a netted air gap, please ensure your tent is well ventilated for your safety.

The seam sealing and waterproofing of a tent are important factors to consider as well. Check the climate of your camping site. See if the weather is mostly rainy. If so, you should consider a fully waterproof camp with good seam sealing to prevent any water inflow into the camp itself. Seeping in of water only results in affecting the quality of your trip. You can use tape to prevent water from seeping into your tent and potentially damaging your items and gadgets.
